What Waiting for a Baby Has Taught Me About God
Share

There are dreams we quietly tuck away in our hearts long before they ever become reality.
For me, one of those dreams has always been becoming a mother.
For the past three years, my husband and I have been waiting and praying for our first child together. Like many couples walking this road, there have been moments of excitement, disappointment, questions, and tears. While I continue to work with medical professionals and pursue wisdom through the resources God has provided, I am also prayerfully trusting the Lord with what only He can do.
Waiting has not been easy.
There are days when I imagine what it will be like to hear little footsteps in our home, to rock my baby to sleep, to celebrate birthdays, and to watch my husband become the incredible father I already know he will be. I especially dream about having a little girl, though I know whatever child God entrusts to us will be His precious gift.
Yet this journey has taught me something I never expected.
Life is not ultimately about marriage.
It is not ultimately about children.
As beautiful as those gifts are, they were never meant to carry the weight of our identity or our hope.
Only Jesus can do that.
If my joy depended on becoming a mother, then every negative pregnancy test would have the power to steal my peace. If my hope rested in circumstances instead of Christ, my life would crumble every time my plans didn’t unfold the way I imagined.
Instead, God has been teaching me to build my life on the only foundation that cannot be shaken.
He is my Rock.
He is my peace.
He is my portion.
One verse that has carried me through this season is Psalm 34:19:
“Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.” (KJV)
That doesn’t mean life will be free from pain.
It means our pain is never the end of the story.
When I look back over my life, I can see challenge after challenge that I never expected to face. Yet through every season, God’s faithfulness has remained constant. The greatest gift He has ever given me isn’t the promise of motherhood—it’s the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Knowing Him gives me a hope that reaches far beyond this life and into eternity.
That eternal perspective has changed everything.
It allows me to grieve honestly without losing hope.
It allows me to wait without becoming bitter.
It allows me to celebrate others while trusting that God is still writing my story.
So while I wait, I choose not to waste the waiting.
I will continue seeking the Lord with my whole heart.
I will continue serving His people and loving the community He has placed around me.
I will continue becoming the woman He is calling me to be today, believing that every season is preparing me for what comes next.
And if one day God places a little girl—or little boy—into my arms, I pray that I will receive that child with grateful hands, remembering they were never truly mine to begin with. They belong to the Lord, and I will simply have the sacred privilege of raising them to know Him, love Him, and walk in the purpose He has prepared for their life.
If your heart is waiting for something today—a child, healing, restoration, reconciliation, or an answered prayer—don’t lose sight of the One who is holding your future.
God’s goodness is not measured by whether your timeline matches your expectations.
His goodness is revealed most clearly in His unchanging character.
He is faithful.
He is near.
He is worthy of your trust.
Be encouraged. Your waiting is not wasted, and your story is still being written by the Author who never makes a mistake.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to trust Your perfect timing and keep my heart anchored in You while I wait. Fill me with peace, strengthen my faith, and remind me that Your plans for my life are always good. Teach me to serve You with joy in every season and prepare me for every blessing You have ordained for my future. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
